Roofing calculator: squares, bundles and everything else to order

By the Hewer team · · 1 min read

The Roof Material tool on a phone: 45 bundles of shingles for a 1,342 square foot roof, 15 squares to order with 10 percent waste, and a plan of the roof.
Length, width and pitch in; squares and bundles out.

Ordering a roof is a list, not a number: shingles, underlayment, edge metal, ridge cap. Roof Material works out the whole list from the size and pitch of the roof.

What Roof Material works out

  • The real roof area, adjusted for pitch.
  • Squares to order and shingle bundles, with your waste factor.
  • Underlayment, edge metal for the eaves and rakes, starter, hip and ridge cap, and roofing nails.
  • Gable or hip roofs, or a roof built from sections such as a dormer or a porch.
  • A plan view of the roof.

How to use it

  1. Choose Length × width, Sections for a roof with a dormer or a porch, or Area if you already know the sloped area.
  2. Enter the roof's length and width, and pick the pitch and whether it's a gable or a hip roof.
  3. Set the waste percentage for the roof's complexity under More options.
  4. Read the squares and bundles, then the rest of the list.

Tips from the field

  • Raise the waste factor for hips, valleys and dormers.
  • Get the pitch from Roof Slope if you don't have it.
  • Check the bundles per square for the shingle you're buying; some products differ.

The Hewer Trade Toolkit is free. It runs in any phone browser, saves your last inputs, works in feet and inches or metric, and keeps layouts in job folders you can export as a PDF. If you run a crew, the same calculators are inside Hewer's crew app, next to the jobs, the schedule and the clock-in.
